SALFORD CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession, so you do not need to be referred by your doctor. A chiropractor is trained to diagnose your problem and will refer you to another health-care practitioner if necessary.
Chiropractors treat problems with joints, bones and muscles, and the effects they have on the nervous system. Working on all the joints of the body, concentrating particularly on the spine, they use their hands to make often gentle, specific adjustments (the chiropractic word for manipulation) to improve the efficiency of the nervous system and release the body's natural healing ability.
Chiropractic does not involve the use of any drugs or surgery.
The effectiveness of chiropractic treatment is supported by research as well as by various UK government and medical organisations. Chiropractic may be available to patients under the umbrella of the NHS, but this will depend on the situation within a specific NHS Primary Care Trust. Otherwise patients see chiropractors in a private capacity either through self referral or as a result of a referral from their GP, other doctor or health professional. BCA chiropractors also treat people who are seeking treatment through private health insurers.

HISTORY OF CHIROPRACTIC
Written records from the ancient Greek and Chinese civilizations, dating back several thousand years, refer to spinal manipulation. The inception of modern chiropractic can be traced back to 1895 when Canadian Daniel David Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment and went on to found The Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 1897.
The 20th century saw the growth and development of the profession worldwide, gaining recognition and respect for the place it has taken in the primary care environment. Influential research has underpinned the development of the profession and has come both from both within and outside of the chiropractic research communities.
Chiropractic is unique in that the profession is organised internationally and there are international standards for education.
The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is the largest and longest-standing association for chiropractors in the UK. It was founded in 1925 and has a membership comprising well in excess of 50% of the UK’s registered chiropractors. The BCA only accepts members who have graduated from a nationally or internationally-recognised college of chiropractic education, after a minimum of four years full-time training and ensures its chiropractors maintain high standards of conduct, practice, education and training.
The BCA was a founder member of the European Chiropractors Union and the World Federation of Chiropractic.
All BCA members are covered by a high quality professional indemnity insurance and the Association operates a robust professional standards and complaints management process.
HOW CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP?
People of all ages and from all walks of life can benefit from chiropractic treatment, from babies and children, through adulthood and into later years and including pregnant women.
Chiropractors treat problems with joints, bones and muscles, and the effects they have on the nervous system. Treatment consists of a wide range of manipulation techniques (some very gentle) designed to improve the function of the joints, relieving pain and muscle spasm.
Such skilled manipulation is very specific, directed at individual joints in order to reduce strains and improve mobility in one area without disturbing another.
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.[1] Chiropractic is generally considered to be complementary and alternative medicine,[2] a characterization many chiropractors reject.[3] Chiropractic treatment emphasizes manual therapy including spinal manipulation and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation, and includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling.[4] Traditionally, it assumes that a vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction can interfere with the body's function and its innate ability to heal itself.[5]
D. D. Palmer founded chiropractic in the 1890s and his son B.J. Palmer helped to expand it in the early 20th century.[6] It has two main groups: "straights", now the minority, emphasize vitalism, innate intelligence, spinal adjustments, and subluxation as the leading cause of all disease; "mixers" are more open to mainstream and alternative medical techniques such as exercise, massage, nutritional supplements, and acupuncture.[7] Chiropractic is well established in the U.S., Canada and Australia.[8]
For most of its existence chiropractic has battled with mainstream medicine, sustained by ideas such as subluxation that are considered significant barriers to scientific progress within chiropractic.[9] Vaccination remains controversial among chiropractors.[10] In recent decades chiropractic has gained more legitimacy and greater acceptance among medical physicians and health plans and has had a strong political base and sustained demand for services,[11] and evidence-based medicine has been used to review research studies and generate practice guidelines.[12] Opinions differ as to the efficacy of chiropractic treatment[13] and the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of maintenance chiropractic care are unknown.[14] Although spinal manipulation can have serious complications in rare cases,[15] chiropractic care is generally safe when employed skillfully and appropriately.[16]
